Our new president, Don Wagner, is setting aside his traditional hand and power tools he uses at home and at the CIWW workshop to show us one of the newest pieces of computer-assisted woodworking equipment: The Carvewright Wood Carving Machine. He will discuss how the Carvewright system compares to CNC routing systems, including the strengths and weaknesses of of both types of systems. He compares this 21th Century machine to the 20th Century hand-held circular power saw to the 19th Century Chisel – all foriegn and scary for their times.

Don recommends that traditional woodworkers see the capacity of this technology, so you can understand the changes in the woodworking profession. In all cases, the woodworker remains in control – creating the design and using the most appropriate technology for the job.

Adventures in Woodworking with Rick White

Like many of us Rick White developed an interest in woodworking thanks to the tutelage of a grandfather. Starting in the family jelly making business, moving on to a 20-year stint in the bakery supply business, spending a couple of years as a stock broker in the World Trade Center, and landing in the heating and air conditioning industry for the past 12 years Rick’s work experience has been varied to say the least. However, his passion for woodworking has remained as a constant.

Over the years Rick has made many clocks, boxes of all sorts, and pens/pencils. Most of those projects were fashioned with a wide range of power and hand tools that belonged to Rick’s grandfather. Loving to fish and work with wood, Rick’s grandfather set out to help his oldest grandson learn to love both hobbies – and success was realized.

Come to be entertained and enlightened by a man of diverse interests that truly enjoys what he does.
