Drying wood
Philip Peak

This may seem like a strange question but, here goes.

I have a pin type moisture meter and I understand they will only read as far down as the pins will go. I would love to be able to afford this $500 + pinless ones but alas, not in the cards right now.

if I were to say, drive some thin brad type nails into the wood pieces and use alligator clip leads to my pins on the meter then to the nails, would that give me a pretty accurate reading?

Tom Ladd

your brads are likely steel and have different conductivity than the pins of the meter. Try the pins in a board, then insert brads connected to pins by copper wire, lastly plane the board down to where the marks from the brads are removed, then insert the pins there. Is reading 2 the same, or close to, reading 3?

Let us know the results.
